Lead Based Paint Testing in Portland

Picture
Why is Lead Paint a Problem?
Lead is a neurotoxin. Inhaling or ingesting it can "cause behavioral problems, learning disabilities, seizures and in extreme cases, death."

Why was Lead Paint Used in Homes?
Lead paint was more durable than other paints and brought out better color. Lead paint was used more frequently around doors and windows because a stronger paint was needed in areas where paint would need to withstand rubbing, banging and constant use.
How Does it Become Toxic?
  • If lead based paint is sanded or cut it can become airborne and inhaled.
  • As the paint chips or peals it can be eaten by young children who like it because it tastes sweet.

How is Lead Paint Tested?
Lead Based Paint can be chemically tested using
EPA method 40 CFR 745.88(c)(1) and (2).

Which Properties are more likely to have lead paint?
Lead based paint was banned in 1978.

Likelihood of a home having lead based paint based on when it was built:
  • 1960-1978 = 24%
  • 1940-1960 = 69%
  • Prior to 1940 = 87%
